I grew up without any aspiration to study Law, partly because I did not have any legal role models around me. Hence, I never saw myself going down that path, not until I was in A’ levels. I became good at social sciences, and this made me enjoy the subjects even more. That marked the beginning of the journey that led to a Law degree.
Upon completion of my LLB, I returned to Nigeria for the Nigerian Law School Programme. At this point, I knew I was really doing it; I was going to practise as a lawyer. Shortly after I was called to the Bar, my job search began. I was bent on practising as an in-house lawyer, however there were very few opportunities that did not require prior experience at a law firm. This led to me beginning my career at a law firm for a year, after which I felt it was time to pursue my in-house practice aspiration.
Being a millennial,, I began my search from LinkedIn and secured an interview with Honeywell Group. And like they say, the rest is history.
My initial attraction to the position was the Group’s wide portfolio, with companies across multiple sectors of the economy: from FMCG, to engineering and even real estate. The prospect of gaining experience spanning such industries was a major selling point for me.
A few months later, I joined Honeywell Group as a Legal Associate in the Corporate Head Office and the journey so far has been promising. It has been one of learning and unlearning, which continues to proffer opportunities daily. This is mostly because class teachings about the legal system forms a small fraction of what obtains in practice. Hence, my role offers a continuous learning platform for me. Since I started at the Group, I have been afforded trainings, both on the job and externally, which have contributed to driving my career as a lawyer working in-house. My position also requires interaction with respective stakeholders of the Group, and through this, I am taught the value of building relationships. Importantly, I am offered opportunities to relate with people who have walked similar paths with mine.
Currently, my position accommodates my practice as a Company Secretary, as well as experience in the corporate commercial and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) aspects of Law. From attending board meetings and even facilitating meetings on my own, I am continually exposed to real practice as an in-house lawyer.
It is easier to make career decisions when you are sure of what it is you want per time. This clarity will guide your actions and will likely bring you closer to what you want. At Honeywell Group, there are opportunities for professional growth and personal development which are both important components for a well-rounded career.
