The legal profession was a first love for me. My dad was a judge, my mother and my elder sister also studied law. But while I preferred to be an in-house counsel, I was also determined to work for organisations that will provide me with the opportunity to flourish and attain the pinnacle of my career. To make this happen, I got a bachelor’s degree in law from the Obafemi Awolowo University to start me on my journey in the legal profession.
Career Journey
After completing my degree and going to law school, I began my career at Banwo & Ighodalo, one of the leading full-service law firms in Nigeria. Subsequently, I worked at Zenon Petroleum & Gas Limited (now Forte Oil Plc) where I was primarily responsible for the legal function of the real estate unit. I soon decided to find a new craving that would allow me to take on new responsibilities within the legal profession. That desire compelled the move to Honeywell Group. I joined Honeywell Group as Team Lead, Company Secretariat & Regulatory Affairs.
My 7-year journey in the Group has been exciting. My role sits within a larger Group Legal and Regulatory Affairs Department. I work with a talented and passionate team of lawyers but what is most fascinating about my role is that I have to provide company secretariat and regulatory affairs support to all the operating companies of the Group across diverse sectors of the economy. This is also the challenging part of the role. But it is a challenge which I truly relish. I have to keep up with the changes in regulation across various sectors in order to provide the right support to the businesses.
My career at the Group has also been rewarding and I was recently promoted to Head, Company Secretariat & Regulatory Affairs.
The Honeywell Experience
Honeywell Group places a premium on and invests in the development of its employees. The Group encourages you and provides the right environment to accelerate your career. For me, this is the most defining feature of my career at the Group. Indeed, the more I realised the business was committed to my development, the more I equally became invested in the business. Since joining the Group, I have successfully completeda master’s degree programme in Commercial & Corporate Law from the University of London.
If you work hard and are eager to learn, opportunities will come your way at Honeywell Group. I have become a more robust corporate lawyer since joining the Group, and I have also become more entrepreneurial in my thinking. Today, I can better appreciate how law supports creation of business and economic value.
On a personal note, I would also say the work environment here at Honeywell promotes balance between personal and professional lives, which is obviously something that is of utmost importance to every individual, whether male or female, married or otherwise. For instance, I found the creche at the office premises very useful when I had my twin-children. The creche meant I could have my kids close by at that important stage of their lives.
Why Honeywell
When you work for Honeywell Group, you work for a proudly indigenous business with world class practices and a strong desire to last for many centuries. At Honeywell Group, you become part of a team that is building an enduring legacy. For an indigenous business of nearly 50 years of existence, there is so much to learn from and there is so much to build on. And, if you ask me, this is what I think a lot of people want from a fulfilling career.
In my seven years with the Group, I have had the privilege of learning from, and working with many exceptionally brilliant people across diverse functions. But in spite of the diversity of backgrounds and skills, Honeywell employees are united in the pursuit of excellence and stay true to the vision of the business.
Advice for Applicants seeking to join the Group
Honeywell Group continues to provide a platform for growth for its employees.
